Pros

Some real diamonds among the debris. Staff can be motivated. There are some very skilled contractor and employees. Not a sweatshop...

Cons

Highly risk-adverse corporate culture. The IT department is heavily outsourced and weakly managed. Instead of being goal or output driven, management is entirely process-driven. Department does not embrace any leading edge technology, open source or the cloud in any significant manner.

nice people who want to do the right thing always

Cons

convoluted processes and procedures which alone account for a significant chunk of the costs and time associated with any initiative. All of this results in IT teams not being efficient or nimble to react to changing business needs and making it very difficult to quickly align to corporate strategies

Great people on my team, and in middle-management.

Cons

Inefficient and unsympathetic "top-down" micromanagement. Too much emphasis on conformity and standardization, rather than providing an incentive to innovate. Low pay compared to equivalent position elsewhere in the industry.
