Great Company to start or end your career

Pros

This is a fun place to work, for the most part everyone on the staff is friendly (including management). My group is a phenomenally talented group of people who all work very hard. The benefits are on par with other software companies. Good daily perks of free fruit/beverages, weekly free breakfast and Friday cookies. Annual company wide weekend up NH, and a company trip every 5 years to fun sometimes exotic locations are something to look forward to. Year over year, the growth has been steady and constant even through the recession, so it's comforting to know your job is not in jeopardy when times are tough.

Cons

The salaries are sub-par with other software companies. It's not a place to make a career - great place to start and gain valuable experience, or to spend the last 5 - 10 years of your career before retirement. Trying to move up the ladder is nearly impossible, as upper management (who have all been here forever) continuously hold staff back. I've asked for promotion consideration numerous times only to be ignored.

Pros

Great HQ campus in Natick (facilities, gym, cafe,...) Good work-life balance MATLAB is used and respected by millions across the world Technically-oriented company (what did you expect with the name MathWorks) Aims for average pay, but has good benefits Slow but steady on business side

Cons

Very process-oriented which can get frustrating at times (some decisions take forever to be made) Founder still involved in the details

Pros

Good management team; Sufficient down time; Stable company with not a lot of layoffs lingering; Pretty good product to contribute to; Very good benefits and >50% 401k match a 100% of the time; Eventual growth. All in all, this is a great company to work for, if you plan to stay for at least 5-6 years, not a company that can grant instant gratification.

Cons

Pace to market is very slow compared to industry standards, since the product is still primarily a desktop product. Updates cannot be pushed at a brisk pace; Pay might be substandard for the first couple of years given that the Boston suburbs are pretty damn expensive; Behind the curve on industry standard in web services development; Products are not as diverse as one would expect them to be, however that trend seems to be changing fast; Changing teams not as easy as it should be.
