Incompetent leadership

Pros

Amazing coworkers who are brilliant and care greatly about their work.

Cons

CEO is not a leader. He brushed off many people who expressed concern about the administration changed and then the company was completely unprepared when contracts were cancelled. Poor pay for junior staff and no concern about their career progression. As a mentor, it was hard to watch junior staff be overworked and underpaid. They do most of the work and management treats them as expendable. Executive leadership also got huge bonuses (six figures) after almost a third of the company was laid off.

Needs a culture/mindset change

Pros

- good and intelligent coworkers - remote and flexible schedule

Cons

- poor compensation and pto. We get routine emails to donate PTO for colleagues that have emergencies (how about we make an exception for someone in an emergency?) - fear based motivation from management - management is old and only there because they've been at the company for a long time. Not aware of what's needed technologically to push the company forward - hush hush culture - very hierarchical structure - no professional development for junior analysts. I asked to get on a certain type of project for over 1 year. - billing model should be changed - super slow promotions overall: you can tell the company is run by people who have been there a long time. There's little focus on the benefits of new hires and every decision from management is to maximize their retirement package that's coming soon. Motivation should come from a place of excitement and not fear of losing hours or making a mistake.

Pros

Mathematica is a good place for Associate/P1 -level staff to gain experience in a variety of job functions and across a wide range of subject areas. The people are generally kind and intelligent. The company has systems in place to document and disseminate SOPs, and is generally fairly organized. I would recommend this position to people who are very resilient to stress, excellent at advocating for themselves, able to manage 4-6 discrete projects simultaneously, and willing to work for less than the market value of their labor.

Cons

There is a significant culture of overwork at Mathematica, and the pay is not commensurate. Associates are pressured to take on increasingly high levels of responsibility (serving, for example, as Project Managers for portfolios cumulatively worth tens-hundreds of millions of dollars), but they are only paid $55k-65k. Unpaid overtime is normalized. Associates, who are hourly non-exempt, regularly work 50+ hours/week but, like everyone else, are basically required to document only 40 hours on their timesheets. As another reviewer put it, there is a culture of working more hours than are billed to the company's clients. Many staff are spread thin between their projects, some working on 6+ at a time and at >100% LOEs, and that exhaustion sometimes leads to corner-cutting on projects.
