Pros

Mathematica is full of intelligent and kind people, many of whom seem to genuinely care about their jobs. It is an mission driven and employee-owned company so there is rarely any tension between employee well-being and corporate profit margins. The research portfolio is wide-ranging and employees are encouraged to involve themselves in different topics and methodologies. The company provides ample room for growth for junior employees.

Cons

Mathematica charges its client a high rate, which means there is a lot of pressure to deliver excellent research products within the budget. It's common for junior staff to put in well over 40 hours per week, but this effort usually goes unacknowledged. Compensation seems low considering the length of the workweek and level of education required. Mathematica leadership talks a good game about DEI, but every hiring wave seems to fall short of our stated values.

Pros

Employees who work at Mathematica are very high achieving and have very high expectations of the company. Leadership cares about the company and tries hard to do the right thing. Employees have many avenues to voice their concerns. Performance expectations are extremely high. Colleagues are supportive and nice.

Cons

The company is getting bigger which means implementing more structure. There is also a lot of organizational change happening. Many employees who have been with Mathematica for 10 years or more are having a hard time with all the change. While leadership isn't getting everything absolutely right, they are being very thoughtful and deliberate.

Felt like a cog in the wheel

Pros

Important work to be doing. Mathematica is so big that it can take on really complex and interesting work. It is very competitive on bids. Good benefits (other than pay). True 9-5 job with no expectation of work after hours. Very defined ladder for advancement.

Cons

As someone with substantial work experience and a Master's degree, a large proportion of my work was administrative work like formatting documents. I did not have an opportunity to use the skills I have, and my past experience was not taken into account in terms of what I might be able to handle on projects. I was hired at a certain pay-grade because that's where people who have a Master's degrees always start. I truly felt like a cog in the wheel. Pay was not at all competitive. I was not inspired to do my best work here.
