Pros

Good benefits, great benefits of your a parent. Company is lead by other DVMs, with real world experience. Many opportunities for growth or career development. Support for people to become the best versions of themselves. Great culture in most teams. Management has seen significant improvement with the change in leadership. Large bonus for tenured members.

Cons

Large influx of inexperienced caregivers in all roles bringing the medical quality and patient care down in recent years. Some teams have poor culture taking away from the positivity of the job for some.

Pros

Everyday will be different- there’s vastly different issues and emergencies that walk through the door all the time. No two days are alike. This job requires a very hands-on approach and attitude, which is rewarding if you feel a pull or desire to help others. The entire team is supportive and willing to help new employees- a dynamic work environment means that each issue needs a different approach. The team understands that, and training is pretty comprehensive.

Cons

There are life-threatening issues that walk in- you absolutely have to remain calm. High-stress situations can be difficult to manage at times. Clients can get really anxious about the situation(s), and sometimes take it out on the staff. People worry about their pets- you have to have the empathy and compassion to be able to understand why people are getting upset and stressed. You will deal with the death of animals. That’s part of it. It’s heartbreaking and sad, but part of your job is being there for people in a very vulnerable moment. Again, I wouldn’t call these “cons.” They’re things to consider when pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.
