Pros

Mostly nice people to work with. The culture was okay. The remodeled building for IT was nice.

Cons

Terrible IT management, especially upper management. The pay is very low compared to any other company (example: I nearly doubled my pay by leaving Meijer for another dev job). They will not even try to match pay or take feedback to make the place better in order to keep talent. Out of the couple teams I was on, point of sale was the worst. I had many 70-80 hour weeks with no additional pay or comp time. Both teams I was on had managers leave. One left the company, the other was moved to another team and was never replaced. I spent a lot of time converting old apps and servers from server 2003 (VBScript/javascript junk) to server 2008 (C# .NET 4.6/MVC/SQL), when server 2012 was already available. They are too cheap to just do things the right way. When given options on how to fix or develop something, there was not a single time they didn't choose the band-aid fix. There are far too many old school people in management that just don't understand that younger generations are different. I don't say that expecting everything my way, but they are very adverse to change. If you value your life/time/family, do not work here. You could lose it all.

Pros

You got raises after a ceratin amount of hours. I got 3 in the 11 months that I was there. I was the only person who did my job, that was probably the only thing i liked. I got full time after 3 months of being there. I was the candy girl and organized and stocked the check lanes.

Cons

Not long before i quit cashiers coming in were making way more than what i even started at. Considering i cashiered as well and stocked candy and changed store signs. I did alot more than cashiers alone and i felt that was pretty unfair. I worked 3rd shift and most people on 2nd shift were really rude and/or sat around on the benches with nothing being said to them. I was the only person in my department that was required to work weekends. There was alot of favortism and i mean alot. It's one of those places where news gets around really fast and everyones always worried about your buisness.

Pros

The people are usually friendly and you get 10% discount in general merchandise

Cons

They can do as they please with your availability and your schedule. They give good lip service about how Meijer has family values but the next day they will cut your hours because you are PT and don't care if you can't feed your kids. I was brought in as PT but promised 40hrs a week and then they didn't make their quota and they cut everybody's hours by half. Funny thing is, they are short staffed and are hiring left and right. Also, it is simply not enough time to do your job with half the hours so as a result you get no breaks trying to keep up with demand. They did this 3 weeks before Christmas too. There are no benefits, the Union takes your dues but does nothing for you. Work is usually very physical (lifting, stocking etc) and if they need you anywhere else, they will just tell you to do that regardless of what they originally hired you for. There are really no career opportunities there for advancement of any kind. I got that job because I was desperate for a paycheck like most people are. They will hire anyone really. No drug tests are given. People quit daily so it is a revolving door of faces. Quite strong penalty system for missing days or being over on your break. You get two 15 mins breaks in 8 hrs.
