So much potential

Pros

There's so much potential for growth in Mercury's business - it's amazing to observe as an employee. Mercury is truly a one of a kind for the defense industry.

Cons

Mercury rolls out tools like Confluence with absolutely ZERO training. You're expected to use the tools to help management micro-manage every aspect of your work. This creates even more work for you as an employee that does not make you more efficient. Much the opposite, it slows you down as you have to do things multiple times and report progress using multiple different tools. There is absolutely no correlation between performance and pay. Work really hard? Work long hours? Work more efficiently than others? Congratulations on your 3% merit increase while your lazy coworker who contributes nothing but sucks up to management very well also gets 3%. Mercury is a company that gets things done through a series of diving catches. If you participate in a diving catch, you are rewarded. If you plan ahead and prevent a diving catch from being needed in the first place - expect to get criticized/scrutinized. Mercury rewards diving catches and a lack of planning.

We appreciate your candid feedback. Thank you for posting a review on Glassdoor. Over the past year, we have been rolling out a number of tools that are all designed to help us all work more effectively and efficiently. Examples are Skype for Business, more automated HR systems in the works and the Atlassian Suite- including Confluence. We have also been implementing improved networking and connectivity at certain sites, revamped our facilities and much more. All aimed at providing a better work environment. With that said, we can always do more on training and enablement. As always, the best direct course of action is to speak to your immediate manager on this to help provide additional training you feel you may need. We know there is a learning curve for newer tools and initial training can sometimes take some time. So again, please reach-out to your direct manager. On the subject of merit increases we work very hard at Mercury to provide meaningful merit increases and our salary benchmarking indicates we are very competitive in our compensation structure. We call it Total Rewards and it includes, but is certainly not limited to base salary. Again, it is always best to have a conversation with your immediate supervisor on these matters but we do appreciate and value the feedback.

Leadership Vacuum Within

Pros

Strong business with great leadership at the top. The company has grown considerably over the past few years.

Cons

When you get below the highest levels of the company, there is a severe leadership vacuum - many immature and self-centered managers. The company is in trouble if it's relying on these people for their next generation leaders.

Thank you for your Glassdoor post and recommendation. The need for a strong management capability is recognized by Mercury leadership as a priority to successfully grow. In fact, our M3 management development program has just been redesigned and the first cohort of 20 managers has started their 12-week training and development. Mercury Culture & Values are an emphasis as are business acumen and coaching skill-building. Additionally, a new supervisor training curriculum is getting built to begin next month at locations across Mercury. It is designed to start building management skills quickly and effectively at our sites. It will address setting goals, giving performance feedback and role modeling the Mercury Culture & Values. We hope this has helped with some of your concerns and we always encourage you to share these with your manager or HR Business Partner as detailed feedback helps us improve. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

Growing at expense of employees

Pros

The coffee is not bad.

Cons

Expect to be overloaded with work, to the point where you need to work 70+hours a week - then get told that you are not working smart enough with no concrete examples of how you can improve. And if you get sick or have a personal commitment in the evening one day - you hear about not being a team player. Compensation is not linked to performance.

Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into this review! We're transparent about the fact that we are results-driven company. This and our commitment to our customers at times requires extra effort and hours. 70 is excessive and if that is your experience, especially on a regular basis, we want to know so that we can work with you and your manager to rectify this. We highly value our employees' personal and family lives and understand that you have priorities beyond the workplace. We also make an effort to organize fun events and activities during work hours to give our employees a break and an opportunity to socialize with their coworkers. Over the past 2 years we have worked diligently to implement tools and processes that will scale with us. We are confident that tools such as Skype for Business, Atlassian and YouEarnedIt! among others will serve us as well when we grow as they do now. We hope that you'll share your concerns in detail with you manager or HR Business Partner so that we can work on resolving them. Thank you again for sharing with us here!
