Pros

Adventure - you get to travel the world and actually get some time off to explore (unlike working commercially). Nice ships. VERY easy to move up and get sea time.

Cons

You never get to go home. You will be overdue every time sometimes for ridiculous amounts of time. You can't plan any kind of event or vacation because you never know when you will be home. Working with people in the office can be very frustrating. Very high turnover so you are always training someone new or taking on the duties of those who quit.

Pros

-Travel to certain destinations overseas. Some vessels can visit exotic ports such as EPF's, ARS's, ATB's. -Can work indefinitely onboard to gain sea time or extra money. -Lower stress and productivity levels compared to the rest of the maritime industry.

Cons

-No life work balance and not going to be. The 4 month on / 1 month off schedule is unsustainable and with lack of reliefs ends up being 5-8 months on / 1 month off. You got to lie or play games to get off ships and stay more than a month at home with medical leave. -Compared to same jobs in other parts of the industry with time for time on / off ship, MSC personnel are underpaid for the amount of time they are gone sacrificing. -Ships are substandard compared to their commercial counterparts. -Too difficult to fire mediocre federal employees so there's little accountability onboard or ashore.
