Pros

A different way of providing support for our Military, in turn Serves & Protects our Country! DoD/DoN Personnel, you’re issued a CAC Card. Travel to many different places. Make tons of money with tons of Overtime. Thrift Savings Plan + employer matches up to 5%. You choose your provider for Medical, Dental & Vision. They pay for training & licensure upgrades (not applicable during pre-employment process). When not on a ship or on Vacay: If you qualify, you can get S&Q (Sustenance & Quarters) Pay: where you get a weekly allowance including a hotel. You get paid while awaiting orders for new assignment, unlike some union halls. OJT = On the Job Training Different career avenues to pursue if you want to switch departments. Food & Crew. PTO = Paid Time Off SFL = Ship’s Funded Leave — Secure your spot on the vessel while you go on vacation. Easily double Base Salary when aboard a vessel due to OT & other Incentive pay (ammo pay, hazardous pay, etc) where applicable. YMMV.

Cons

Being away from family for long periods at a time with a short Vacation time. Nepotism & Politics (Just like everywhere else) Depending on the vessel & budget, they can cut OT. Depending on position, getting a relief to you can be tough.

Pros

Travel the world, Good OT on some ships, got me out of debt

Cons

Away from home, the old 80/20 rule - 20% do 80% of the work on the ships

Pros

The benefits and salary are pretty good, with plenty of chances for overtime, but you work every day on ships at sea, usually at a high operational capacity. When you pull into port, you're normally very busy as well. There's a trade off. After you pass your probationary period, it's very hard to get fired. This is a U.S. government job, so unless you really screw up...

Cons

Poor work/life balance. People that know what they're getting into expect this, but it can be rough for people that don't. Late reliefs is a serious problem for some jobs.
