International travel, quality health insurance, save on personal living expenses while on board the ship.

Cons

Minimum time at sea for months… Standard time sea 8 to 10 months. Average overdue time for Mariners is four months. The company touts on their website that a second officer will make $184,000 per year. That is true if you are on a ship for 10 months straight.

They pay well but I guess any job that never let you go home would have to.

Good Pay per year but not per day.

Cons

You work all the time. You can not plan anything like vacations, weddings, graduations etc because you will be overdue for a relief for months with no idea when a relief may show up. The workers in the office hate the mariners.

The opportunity to see parts of the world I would have never otherwise seen is admittedly a plus, and there is more port time than most commercial outfits.

Cons

You will work with some of the worst people on the planet, there’s a complete disconnect between the office and those actually out on ships. You will almost always be overdue.
