Pros

Merck KGaA is trying to make changes in the culture like stressing development and lateral job moves, employee engagement

Cons

Merck culture is 180 degrees from Sigma, which it acquired. Lots of empty words to employees about development and engagement with no implementation and no oversight, since all the line management is legacy Sigma. Development is only for a special 5% or fewer of the employees.

Pros

-Laid-back (at Production locations, more cut-throat at HQ) -Depending on your job, you will probably have a lot of autonomy because there are very few corporate policies and procedures dictating how you do your job (the exception is Chemists who have a ton of SOPs to follow--Chemists have very manual jobs FYI at most of the Production sites--as others have stated, you have to deal with extreme temperatures, high noise levels, bad odors, potential asbestos and chemical exposures, etc) -Depending on your position, you may get an office when other companies give equivalent roles only cubicles (i.e., QC, QA, Engineering, etc. all get offices) -This can be a pro and a con: company has weak internal controls making it easy for your boss to be flexible with you, but also making things like fraud, theft, discrimination and other bad things more likely (after leaving I realized just how bad it was--other companies would never let some of this stuff fly)

Cons

-Unpleasant working conditions and lawsuits waiting to happen. I personally witnessed a coworker being harassed because of their gender. I reported to my supervisor, but they took no further action. There were other things over the years that were red flags, and I'm sure this goes on a lot that I just don't witness--how this place hasn't gotten sued for a hostile workplace I have no idea. I saw another review mention this and I have to agree that it is a problem unfortunately. -There is a lot of deferred maintenance in facilities that puts employees at risk of safety/health problems. Management is working on fixing it, but there is still a lot of focus on being penny-wise, pound-foolish. -I'm not sure there is a fair or transparent pay structure. Most of the driven, high achievers leave after 3-5 years because promotions are given out at a very slow pace and pay is $10-20k below market rate. As someone else mentioned, you have to be the favorite/chosen one to get any kind of promotion--it is treated as an exceptional honor, not a normal part of business operations.
