"Mortenson's DEI efforts feel more like a checkbox for clients than a genuine commitment to inclusivity. Merit-based promotions are rare, and arrogance often seems to play a larger role in advancement. Recognition mainly goes to field positions, leaving office contributions overlooked, especially if you’re a woman or a person of color. If you’re in one of these groups, your chances of promotion may increase—but don’t expect a supportive environment. The values of 'do the right thing' and 'we before me' seem to have disappeared from Mortenson. Although they talk about DEI, hiring internationals is rare—partly because few understand the process, and the law firm they use is extremely conservative. In recruiting, there’s heavy pressure to focus on Black candidates and women, with an emphasis on Black women. While I fully support these efforts, we should also be focusing on talent across the board. Additionally, too many people reach leadership positions due to family connections, something you only discover over time. There’s a real need for change to balance DEI initiatives with true merit-based growth and recognition across all roles. Their operating groups are totally different companies—some are much better, while others are subpar. Stay away from Salt Lake, Seattle, and Phoenix,
