Pros

You can bring your pets to work, if approved. You get a good discount on food/supplies (though the discount is less than what it used to be). It's a pretty chill atmosphere. You get to interact with all different kinds of dogs and the occasional cats. In my opinion, it's the best kind of retail to work. Excellent product and species training within the company. Potential for quarterly bonuses up to $150 and annual profit sharing. Working with customers who are dedicated to their pet's health and nutrition. If you have pets, love pets, are interested in natural, holistic pet products, want a pretty chill place to work then this is it.

Cons

There's an open return policy which means you can return anything after any amount of time for any reason. People definitely take advantage of this policy - returning jackets that their puppy outgrew and harnesses they insist their puppy didn't chew on but definitely did. We issue refunds as long as they have their receipt. I just tell myself - not my circus, not my monkeys. So if the company wants to do that then whatever. Doesn't affect my pay - unless their loose return policy is the reason they don't pay us more. For how much MudBay wants you to know (from naturopathic remedies to diabetes, kidney disease, skin issues to allergies) the pay doesn't really match up. People come to us as a cheaper alternative to their veterinarian - which we don't encourage but happens anyways. We're practically animal nutritionists without the certification. While the starting pay has increased significantly since I've been at the company - I still wish we got paid more. I'm sure most people feel this way about their job though. This company is trying really hard to be a better company but I think they're growing a little faster than they can accommodate and it's frustrating to see new stores open when the old stores are working with old and busted displays, shelving and freezers. Also - we are only closed 5 days out of the year so getting holidays off can be competitive.

Pros

You work with good people (most of the time), you get to meet lots of dogs, pay is above the minimum wage (if only barely). Lots of freedom in what you do all day, and none of the managers I've met have a "if you can lean, you can clean!" mindset. Hourly employees are encouraged NOT to do anything work related off the clock.

Cons

A near total lack of communication between home office (the people who make the decisions) and store staff (the people who have to implement the decisions). This leads to rumors and misinformation spreading around the stores, which then leads to panic and frustration. The execs have promised better communication but I've yet to see any proof of it. They claim to pay a "living wage" based on the MIT living wage calculator, but that calculator is based on a 40 hour work week and barely anybody is actually working 40 hours. Unless you're a manager or DM! Then you get to be overtime exempt and are quietly expected to work far more than 40 hours! Also, we did not receive a COLA raise this year like we have in years past, so we aren't even making the base hourly rate MIT suggests for a living wage in the Seattle area. At least we're still making $0.86 more than the new Seattle minimum wage, right?

It was great, until it wasn’t.

Pros

- staff discount - break room kurig - 15 minute breaks - much higher wages than what you’d typically get in a retail position. - Probably great for folks who are coming from a big box retailer.

Cons

- It’s up to luck rather or not you have leadership that will help develop you. There is no incentives - only inconveniences - for managers to help you work towards new opportunities in the company. - The company use to be community driven. Tons of community events, opportunities to work outside the store, especially in the summer. - The store use to be what you made it! It was fun and exciting and every day was a party. Now corporate is moving towards a very generic, boring experience. But at least it’s universal, right? - Hiring standards tanked with the formation of the hiring office. The company is filled with folks who neither care about animals, customers or coworkers. - For a company who use to prioritize work life balance, it couldn’t be further from the truth now. Expect maximum days working over minimum hours - including split shifts. - Severe disconnect with home office. Big Wigs don’t care about your experiences or what you have to say. I don’t know if they ever actually did at this point, or if they just stopped pretending. Home office is now full of decision makers who have never worked in store (eXcEpT 40%) or folks who haven’t even stepped foot in one since 2019. Lack of transparency and unfair , sudden decision making has irreparably damaged trust between Muddies and home office. - Between lowering standards for staff and a worsening culture issue, home office no longer prioritizes quality training and staff hiring. Customer service is the biggest reason we HAVE customers - they already know they can get way better deals elsewhere and support actual small, family owned businesses. Now we have staff making facts up, or blatantly lying to customers, or acting cold and sarcastic. Leadership knows this is an issue, but part of the disconnect between staff and home office is because of our eager to please district managers who would rather push things under the rug than communicate with home office. Ongoing, major staff grievances should not be a surprise to CEOs or HR.

The landscape of community outreach has changed a lot since COVID, and our company has never stopped caring about how we can make an impact for homeless pets in the PNW. We are excited about the updated partnerships and community outreach programs our Marketing Team has been implementing this year, and finding ways to support our local communities through donation drives, events, and education. A large proportion of our home office staff does originate from stores, and we are happy to support our stores by soliciting feedback, making regular visits to stores to talk to Muddies face to face, and filling in shifts where we can, especially during our busy holiday season. Having great Muddies in our stores to give exemplary service to our customers and share their education and experience while finding solutions for pets will always be at the heart of who Mud Bay is. This is why finding great Muddies who care about people and pets is so important to us, and how we hire, both on our Recruiting team and with our hiring managers in stores. All Muddies continue to receive our First Year Journey training upon hire, so that they are equipped to accurately answer questions about pet health and nutrition. Any concerns about negative experiences in stores may be directed to HR@mudbay.com.
