Pros

Great discount on food and supplies for your cats and dogs. They pay you slightly higher than other retailers.

Cons

You will get reprimanded if you push back on upper management. Customers are allowed to walk all over you and you have to take it. They act like they are a great, inclusive, employee owned company, but don’t really care about their employee’s ideas to improve the environment of the store.

You Will Do Fine...If You Keep Your Mouth Shut

Pros

A lot of benefits, including Health insurance if your full time, 401K even if you are part time and have been there for a while (6 months I think). Really good employee discount, relaxed work environment if you stay on task. Train their staff very well so you know exactly what it is you are selling. Get to interact with cute animals. The people you physically work with at the stores are generally awesome.

Cons

Home office (corporate) has zero respect for their employees. They like to throw the term "employee owned" around a lot, on paper this might be true but I have yet to see any practical proof of that. They are entirely focused on expanding and opening new locations while letting struggling stores die, so you best hope you land a job at a down town store or you will have a very sucky experience. They are entirely focused on growth to the detriment of there employees, and they will basically ignore any feed back and just expect the staff to make it work. They use one of the worst point of sale systems I've ever seen and one of the stores I filled in for was still running windows 7 on their computers. They will lie to your face to get what they want out of you, also can be very petty if you get on their bad side. Let me give you an example of the corporate mindset, as I am writing this the world is going through COVID 19, at the beginning of the pandemic the home office did a company wide call to basically inspire and reassure their employees, one of the speakers chose to let the staff know how hard it was to work from home, how boring it was, and how terrible being away from the office was. This was said to people who had no other financial choice but to leave the safety of there homes, risk there lives and the lives of their loved ones. Mud Bay is the best retail job I have ever had, they do just enough to make things livable, but like with any retail company, the needs of their retail workers are consistently ignored and growth is prioritized above all else.
