Pros

The pay is good, and because you are in a union environment, you get "stuck" from looking outside because the pay continues to rise.

Cons

Pigeon holed. if you do not "fit" into the view of upper management, or are not a recruited intern, you will not get promoted based on experience. Strictly who you know.Seniority means nothing except more pay. Not opportunity for growth if you are not a favored one.

Pros

I have a really great team and my supervisor is wonderful. The pay is fair.

Cons

On-calls and temps are not protected at all, and were denied access to the union by the County Employee Relations Board. As an on-call or a temp, you have less access to permanent or regular employment than interns.

Pros

Great Benefits, Time off (depending on dept), No micromanagement (depending dept)

Cons

Pay is very low considering other government agencies and considerably lower than the private sector, Much favoritism and political rhetoric and corrupt to some degree, illusion created by the larger organization to make the rank and file worker individually valued when they really are not, no advancement opportunities, poor on-boarding, training and education opportunities. Very cheap and tight budgeted oriented.

The County’s compensation philosophy is the foundation for classification and compensation decisions. Chapter 9 of the County code states: "It is county policy to establish a compensation plan that provides pay and benefits necessary for the county to recruit, select, and retain qualified employees … ; recognize employee performance, growth, and development; maintain an appropriate internal relationship among classifications and employees based on job responsibilities, qualifications, and authority." Multnomah County Personnel Rule (MCPR) § 5-45 further describes how the county’s compensation philosophy, market, etc. are defined based on the code’s broad policy: -Public sector is our labor market -Labor market pay data are the most accurate indicator of prevailing wages for comparable jobs -Compensation structure is based on market data -Pay grades reflect the midpoint of the labor market for job classifications
