Pros

Service to the Navy mission is rewarding. Interesting work, good benefits and ample amount of training opportunities. Work schedules are flexible which affords a good work-life balance. A professional organization.

Cons

Work can be challenging and many offices/departments are under staffed. There is little room for local mobility, must be willing to move to a region where a headquarters is located.

Pros

Professional environment with an important mission. Challenging work with good benefits and security. Leadership actually listens to people in the organization and cares about professional development of their workforce.

Cons

Work-life balance can be challenging in a military organization. The current budget environment makes it difficult to do the job and makes change necessary but hard.

Pros

Majority of co-workers act as a team and do their best to communicate. Training is encouraged but recent budgets have restricted to mainly local offerings. Value of diversity and culture is high (e.g. lunch-time events with displays, speakers and food during the year. Flexible schedule (choose 8 hr 5 days or 9 hr with every other Friday off) and telework opportunities depending on your position. Opportunities to take 2-5 year positions overseas. Public transportation incentives. Good mix of people at varying stages in their careers. Normally only asked to do overtime (other than travel) during last quarter of fiscal year.

Cons

Furloughs and sequestration uncertainties further hinder project progress and moral in supporting the mission. Promotions seem to be advertised but you need to be willing to relocate.Computer storage is often limited and updating to new systems is cumbersome and time consuming. Facilities outdated with unreliable temperature control and pest problems intermittently. Work is often hurry up and wait-never can a project be completed on time. Given it's big govt, change difficult unless you are in upper management.
