Pros

Majority of co-workers act as a team and do their best to communicate. Training is encouraged but recent budgets have restricted to mainly local offerings. Value of diversity and culture is high (e.g. lunch-time events with displays, speakers and food during the year. Flexible schedule (choose 8 hr 5 days or 9 hr with every other Friday off) and telework opportunities depending on your position. Opportunities to take 2-5 year positions overseas. Public transportation incentives. Good mix of people at varying stages in their careers. Normally only asked to do overtime (other than travel) during last quarter of fiscal year.

Cons

Furloughs and sequestration uncertainties further hinder project progress and moral in supporting the mission. Promotions seem to be advertised but you need to be willing to relocate.Computer storage is often limited and updating to new systems is cumbersome and time consuming. Facilities outdated with unreliable temperature control and pest problems intermittently. Work is often hurry up and wait-never can a project be completed on time. Given it's big govt, change difficult unless you are in upper management.

Life/work balance can be achieved

Pros

Life/work balance is good; my coworkers are atypical of the government worker stereotype; they work hard and try very hard to keep their customers happy, working here makes you feel patriotic and like you are doing something good for the Navy; good benefits

Cons

Can be furloughed or experience sequestration; too much bureaucracy, technologically behind at times with outdated equipment, not much opportunities for salary growth once you reach step 10

Pros

Flexible schedules, good people, meaningful relavant work.

Cons

Sequestration, Continuing resolutions, Hiring freeze, corporate DC bias, that forgets what it is like in the field.
