Pros

NIH offers some of the best resources available and allows one to focus on the research. The salary for a postdoc is very good.

Cons

Job prospects for postdocs in general, not just at NIH, are not good. Cost of living in the area and traffic are tough. Bureaucracy is high

Pros

Surrounded by hundreds of brilliant scientists, lots of cutting edge research going on, budgets and grant writing are not a concern.

Cons

Almost not way to advance past a post-doc. No opportunities to write grants and secure independent funding, which makes it difficult to get a PI position as your next job.
