Pros

Salary growth is almost guaranteed, and not at all dependent on competence. Those who put in the years with the institute will make high salaries. The mission and goal of the institute is unbeatable, and employees are well respected by all outside of NIH.

Cons

Advancement reduced to government determined GSA rates. Management positions filled by years experience as opposed to competence, so management is not often not the best person for the job. High employee turnover for competent employees while the opposite is true for incompetent employees leads to a brain drain.

Pros

Access to top labs, equipment and expertise

Cons

As a foreign fellow, NIH generally sponsors the worst type of visa that makes it extremely difficult to pursue a job in the US after completing contract at NIH Qulaity of training is subjective and dependent on PI. PI's are not held accountable so many fellows get a raw deal
