Pros

Good salary for post docs Excellent research facility Good health insurance for employers and their families Great working environment Salary increase every year

Cons

Post doctoral fellows have to relocate to a new job after 5 years of fellowship. Not many opportunities available for job prospects within the organization.

Pros

better pay than postdoctoral fellowships elsewhere decent resources in most labs access to many leaders in the field full access to most medical journals and books good health benefits

Cons

leadership often does not have recent experience with grant writing--so you will need outside help to write grants many processes for obtaining resources, travel, etc are not transparent some of the ethics requirements for outside activities hinder professional development mentor quality can be very poor

Pros

NIh gives a very good health insurance for family which is very important. You have freedom to work and flexible hours is definitely plus.

Cons

There are very limited opportunity within NIH if you have already worked as fellow. As a fellow you can stay upto 5 years.
