Pros

I learned something new everyday. There was never a dull moment. I got to book and meet influential people from wide-ranging industries -- actors, musicians, politicians, authors, etc. The job was incredibly challenging. I became better at writing, listening and managing time. NPR's benefits were excellent -- health/dental/vision insurance, retirement fund, flexible spending account, free books/music/films, gym and health office inside headquarters. NPR also paid a higher salary than other public radio outlets.

Cons

Lots of politics. People in power made decisions about your job when they had no idea what it was like doing your job. Promises were broken. The days were stressful -- lots of deadlines, difficult colleagues, some micromanagement. It was extremely difficult to move up in the ranks. I was a "Production Assistant" doing the work of someone two levels above me.

Pros

Cool creative opportunities, nice coworkers, fun, nerd prom culture and Tiny Desk Concerts make this place a nice place to work.

Cons

Very hierarchical, and boys club culture makes it hard to get promoted, especially if you come from outside journalism (like technology, starts ups or otherwise). Diversity in leadership is practically nonexistent.
