Egos and Horror

Pros

Healthcare, vision, and tuition benefits

Cons

Lack of professionalism. Large egos in every office Dean's level or higher. Poor management leads to a bloated, at times seemingly non-functional and just plain stupid bureaucracy. Faculty treats staff like second-class citizens and all wrongdoings by the higher class lead to nothing more than a slap on the wrist. There is not one day that I have not seen an administrator in tears due to faculty or leadership behavior. Staff is leaving in droves for a reason

Pros

Their brand name is quite strong, the labs are well equipped, the faculty is world renowned.

Cons

I was warned by several people in my profession (senior and junior faculty members and postdocs alike) about the abusive environment in the Adolph lab at NYU, but I had to see it to believe it. Basic lab operations are inscrutably Machiavellian for no good reason, there is no transparency, the PI and her close friend and co-author openly denigrate other senior scientists in the field in the presence of young students (including undergrads), favoritism towards a certain long-standing researcher is rampant, and there seems to be no real system for feedback or improvement of status quo. As for the culture, working through the lunch hour and eating "lunch" at 6pm before working for a few hours before leaving for home is common. Over half the students/researchers in this lab regularly see therapists to deal with their specific lab-induced stress. It is honestly a scary place for anyone, particularly those early in their careers, to be in.

Pros

Wonderful colleagues, education benefits (sort of — read the fine print!), gorgeous campus, international presence. It's an interesting place to work.

Cons

management and higher leadership are terrible. Workloads are unsustainable, and management sends email reminders to take vacations but does not reduce the workload.
