Pros

NEON has been a tremendous experience working with a diversified group of professionals to create the largest ecological data collection system in the world. Battelle's management has made getting to the target construction goals possible. A truly challenging opportunity for people all over the United States, AK and Puerto Rico. This is the most rewarding project of my career. It is particularly fun to see young professionals and scientists grow and have the chance to move about the 20 domains (regional offices).

Cons

Building something new comes with many changes and problems. It has been difficult at times to create everything from scratch. Most systems and platforms are created in the minds of the scientists and engineer to make a vision to complete, this takes courageous people to undertake.

I'm fairly certain that I'm on a sinking ship?

Pros

1) Headquarters are in Boulder, Colorado. This means you will have access to world class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and beer. 2) An important ecological mission.

Cons

1) Headquarters are in Boulder, Colorado. Due to the pros listed above, this means you will likely be forced to rent at an incredibly inflated price. Your dreams of home ownership will follow roughly the same trajectory as your dreams of having a career at NEON. 2) Mismanagement at every level. The prospects for this project, even after Battelle took over, are grim. There is simply too much left to be done, with too little funding, with workers that are trying to do too much. This leads to poor quality and a poor vision for the future. While upper management is putting on a happy face, I find it incredibly unlikely that this project will be looked at as a success. In 10 years, it will be held as the shining example of how not to manage a big data project. 3) Worker morale seems to be abysmal (evidenced by the reviews on this site), as people are overworked and spread too thin. This translates to a) no time or motivation to train incoming scientists b) a low retention rate which leads to c) a loss of institutional knowledge that reinforces this cycle. I'm not even convinced my manager wants to be here. What little hope is left seems to be more geared towards a future career elsewhere rather than a belief that NEON can succeed. Before the construction deadline later this year, I fully expect a mass exodus of managers that don't want NEON as a blemish on their resume/CV when its inevitable failure becomes more public. 4) NEON likely should have been defunded many years ago. The science community should be VERY concerned about the future of this company and what it will mean for future funding of these types of large projects.

Pros

About the benefits being a pro and the only pro for so many previous reviews, all but one previous comment regarding benefits as a pro should not only be ignored but the overall ratings should be adjusted for the loss of that pro. As of January 2nd 2017 all previous NEON employees officially transitioned to Battelle Ecology benefits. The only pro for Battelle benefits is as one reviewer excitedly stated three times, they begin on day one. The mission is still a pro but many are finding that alone is not enough to keep them hear. Finally, if you can work with, through or around all of the challenges you will face here, you will be well experienced in overcoming any challenge you may face in the future.

Cons

-Benefits -Pay -Management -Attrition rates -General culture or lack thereof -Impossible deadline with fixed scope and budget, all while lacking in quality. -Everyone is wearing too many hats and filling roles they don't have the expertise to perform successfully.
