Pros

Good pay, secure job, clear career trajectory and interesting work. Things are fairly flexible. There are a lot of opportunities for high performers to achieve and guardrails to get low performers back on track. Kinda hard to beat overall.

Cons

Same as any government position - byzantine bureaucracy, watching contractors fleece taxpayers for pointless vanity projects, tendency for cynicism and inaction from the staff. It's not clear where the ship is sailing, and whether the lofty goals set by management are even possible. It can get pretty hopeless. But then you break through, and hey, you did a thing that would have taken 5% of the effort outside of the fed! Great job.
