Pros

This is a safe company in a recession - they will always be in business. You are unlikely to become retrenched. Hours are regular, and this company will suit if you are after a quiet life. Good sharesave scheme and pension (was a final salary) along with a strong work life balance ethic

Cons

Low morale and dissatisfaction on the electricty system operator side of the business. Poor leadership, little chance of career progresion, with people held at the upper limit of their pay scale for years to come and those at the bottom strung along with false promises. There is a need to keep operational people where they are. Precious little empowerment, with micro management on safety principles (for example a company wide mandatory reverse parking policy). Senior management out of touch with the electricity system operator, with seniors huddled in corporate HQ in the midlands rarely if ever coming down to the SO (system operator) business.

Pros

Career and skill development is very much up to the employee and is otherwise limitless. Hardwork is rewarded with recognition, compensation and promotion. Encouragement to succeed by management. High visibility by management within your department and adjacent stakeholders.

Cons

A very large company where it is easy to become transparent in a global sense. On the global level there tends to be some inertia requiring some time for global objectives to be fulfilled and the various departments to become in sync.

Pros

National Grid employs many many very smart people. The resources there are abundant. The only problem is for new people to know exactly where to look. It's not always apparent "who gets things done" or "who is knows specific answers." Training is very limited. On the flip side, if you are willing to be a "looker" and a "doer" with little direction, you can achieve great things.

Cons

Little training. Government style working culture. Union employee population. The CEO is not well known in the US and the company is moving the headquarters from Westborough to NYC. The rumor behind this move is that the CEO would like to have a HQ in London and NY. Westborough is well located.
