Pros

The mission is good. They noticed my potential and tried to give me opportunities to succeed.

Cons

There is a fundamental leadership problem in this place. Very frustrating to work. You try to change things but nothing happens.

Pros

I've worked in different capacities at PHNSY&IMF; various lead production shop positions and in different support codes. The workforce is a mix of some of the brightest formally educated and non-traditionally educated people. Most have good hearts and strive to perform their best. Outside of Portsmouth, we exhibit the most teamwork and ingenuity. Workmanship is he best of all the shipyards public or private. Ship repair and maintenence is a rewarding career where one can feel they've contributed as a citizen to our nation's security.

Cons

We have all the right people in all the wrong places. PHNSY&IMF does not hires managers based on their managing skills or attributes but by either whos the best left standing with time in grade or who is most liked. Most of our department heads would be replaced in the private sector. All the performance shortcomings can be attributed to our senior leadership. Many managers are poor written communicators and non-effective oral communicators. Management has created an environment where the wrench turners are working in fear of the repercussions of making a mistake on the deckplates thus creating a hesitant and inefficient mechanic. My tech code has the highest turn over due to managers. I come to work mostly frustrated but ocassionally entertained by the level of ineptness we tolerate.

Pros

Decent pay for hourly (I progressed from GS-5 to GS-9 in 4 years), lots of time and a half opportunities. When times are good, voluntary travel to some cool locations (Japan, San Diego). Never felt any real safety concerns even in a heavily industrial environment.

Cons

Terrible work life balance. You live for the shipyard, and be prepared for lots of overtime for the foreseeable future. They work you like you're actually in the Navy even though you're a civilian. While not actively treating you like crap, the management continually shows no regard for their employees happiness or opinions. Union agreement only requires them to give you one day off for every 13 days worked. So in a 2 week span you could work 13 twelve hour shifts and only get one day off for rest (you actually catch up on 2 weeks of chores), only to turn around and work another 13 days of twelves. This happened multiple times, including working a back shift 12 on the weekend (6PM-6AM), Sunday off then a full week of day shift 12's, 2 back shift 12's the next weekend, a swing shift on a Monday to "roll back" onto days, and then day shift regular shifts through the weekend. Where's the sleep/recuperation in that?
