Pros

Good benefits, you know almost exactly when you will receive raises. No drug test.

Cons

They state you will make $75-90k starting, but that's not for at least 2.5-3 years. Starting is closer to 55k. Most engineers don't figure this out until they have already signed paperwork, gone through security clearance check, etc. What do you expect from a Fed shipyard where you can't get fired and everybody lives in a drug filled navy town? Sexual harassment, terrible management, and lots of office politics. A lot of my engineering friends from around the shipyard complained about being bored for weeks, then overloaded, then mandatory overtime even if you had nothing to work on. Management doesn't give a damn about you, and why should they? Management has no reason to work hard or invest in their workforce. Don't fall for the Bremerton trap!

Pros

Lots of time off. If you are lazy and useless, this is a dream job for you!

Cons

-There were weeks were I literally wasn't allowed to work on anything. I would leave the shipyard and walk to Starbucks, pick fruit, go for runs, etc. - This place doesn't engineer anything. You would be lucky to manage a project. - Don't expect to move to a different position without the childish managers gettung their panties in a twist. - They actually make you take classes with memorization tests. If you can spew out information onto a piece of paper, you are considered smart. - I would rather have an ice pick lobotomy than walk through the gates at this place again.

Pros

Unique missions with huge impact, and great sense of pride performing work that directly supports our national security. Experience gained by working in program offices, DoD contracts, and acquisitions.

Cons

Lack of diversity (comments concerning gender stereotypes were frequent --- generally, there is a hyperfocus on this topic). Have not experienced this in private sector corporations. Witnessed lack of professionalism in management and leadership behaviors (trash talking employees and high-grades spending significant time gossiping and socializing instead of working. Noticed a trend where many would goof off while a smaller percentage of coworkers would bear a higher workload --- essentially a lack of performance management by leadership. In addition, the IPT construct that pervades acquisitions unfortunately has resulted in ineffectual collaboration --- lack of defined roles and responsibilities, and enormous time wasted in meetings. In turn, this environment can lend itself to bad behavior (bullying, shirking responsibilities, and more). Colleagues have expressed similar experiences, leading to a conclusion that these issues are systemic and ubiquitous.
