Pros

35hr week 28 days leave with flexible options reasonable rates of pay Friendly atmosphere at lower management levels genuine attempts to deal with occupational sickness and health issues Potential to move within the company to gain rounded experience Rail Season Ticket 75% subsidy Good pension Very open to suggestions on safety and supportive of staff who stop work or challenge work methods on the basis of safety concerns. Good internal training opportunities

Cons

Would rather have a meeting than make a decision. Has ridged management processes which are overly bureaucratic. Employee performance management process is a farce. Internal company targets will not deliver the required outputs of the regulator. Tendency to bring in external "expert" directors who arrive with solutions; ie what their last company did. Sometimes Left hand does not appear to know right hand even exists let alone what it is doing. 35hr week can be a joke. in some roles it is more like 60hrs. IT and HR "support services" make you feel like you are supporting them. I would recommend NR to some friends, but not all this is not a company for everyone.

Pros

Good holiday and other personal benefits. If there were anything positive to discuss I'd place it here, unfortunately there's not.

Cons

Bullying, abuse and threat to jobs is a daily constant not only from management, but also from other staff. Bullying is encouraged and endorsed by management. To use your own initiative to solve problems and to get the job down is frowned upon to the point where you're punished by management and then bullied as a reminder for using your initiative. The culture of the company endorses Everyman for him(her) self and "the boys club" is rife. The glossy overlay of culture and diversity is a rouse and if anyone complains, again, bullying and abuse is enforced. I'm almost 50 years old; however, it's the same as being back in secondary school with the gangs of the mean girls and the gangs of the bully boys, except there is no authority figures to keep the bullies in line.

Pros

- good 'company' brand - multiple options for working locations (providing you are willing to relocate) - once you'll have grown a very thick skin, it's a job for life

Cons

- the company and management alpha-male attitude - you are treated as a pariah if you're joining from another industry because you're not a true, hardcore railway man - as I have always been told during my 15-month stint, "it's not what you know, is who you know"
