Pros

Smart, interesting & diverse colleagues great work-life balance nice building cafeteria & illy coffee bar

Cons

management is very top heavy they promote favorites regardless of ability if you're not one of the favorites you need to leave the company for growth opportunity extremely high turnover, resulting in advertisers who never seem to know who to call and a lot of time wasted transitioning accounts managers are adamant you follow an antiquated sales process that results in more work, less time to use modern communication (email) sales goals are given 6 weeks into the quarter and based on your first half performance, therefore they are tougher to achieve (and less payout from NYT) it is a union job and there is a lot of friction between the union and management

Pros

Reaching a broad readership. Getting to know how one of the great newspapers actually works. Enjoying a minor prestige among outsiders.

Cons

Working in distressed industries is not fun, and journalism is a wreck. The NYT doesn't have a clear plan to remain profitable, so it announces new layoffs every year. Revenue from print ads is falling with circulation; revenue from online ads is not rising fast enough. That means salaries are capped and pensions are cut, at least for non-managers.
