Newsroom promotions are often not based on experience, and the system for promoting people is not an equitable one. Promotions are mostly based on optics and favoritism. In more than one case, a person with a lengthy record of HR complaints against them for things including harassment and bullying of other staffers has risen in the ranks, being handed a string of promotions, even being leveraged to roles in which they don’t have relevant experience. The kicker: Employees like this are placed in those roles instead of other staffers (ones without HR records of complaints against them) who DO have the relevant experience. Often, when new newsroom roles are created, they are not advertised — so candidates either internal or external don’t even get an opportunity to apply. Management is clueless and operates from an alternate reality where everything is wonderful. When problems are brought to them, they look the other way and do nothing about it.
