Pros

If you are looking for 30+ days off work, join Northern Trust. If you are looking for a place where following diversity policies is more important than actual job performance, you will love Northern Trust. Once you are in, it's virtually impossible for the company to to fire you. It's a great place to be in this job market.

Cons

Company's philosophy is to provide services at the lowest cost possible. That is why salaries are low. If you are a non-exempt and want to earn more money, they will not let you work overtime. Performance Evaluation process is a sham. You don't really feel this organization wants you to succeed.

Pros

Northern has a very distinct culture that lends itself to a "family" feel. As a result, it's a great place to build solid business relationships. People genuinely appreciate those who go the extra mile or who, at a minimum, are collaborative. Furthermore, the fact that it's accepted and to some degree encouraged that partners move around the organization is a major plus. Northern also does a great job with the work/life balance.

Cons

Clique-y in nature, sometimes hard work is not properly rewarded, but mediocrity is accepted among the "favorites". Skilled employees are not at "market" in salary; thus Northern is not competitive, and quite truthfully, cheap.

Pros

Stable financial institution. Many days off.

Cons

The salaries are terrible - there is no longer a profit sharing plan - pension is not competitive with 3% match rate There is no financial incentive when you are promoted - you get a new name plate and more responsibility. When you are promoted no one celebrates - you may get a cookie, a soda, and a pat on the back. Absolutely no candor is allowed. One is looked at as unprofessional if one speaks their mind. Senior management says their "doors are always open" but will cancel and reschedule and cancel again when you schedule meetings. There is little support for sales people - there is constant organizational change which means administrators may at times support five people and are not allowed to go to lunch. Nothing is communicated until the last minute - while Senior Management prides themselves on "openess". In essence this company is light years behind its competitors with regard to technology, salary, promotion, employee appreciation, and the "Go Green" movement. Northern Trust still uses styrofoam.
