Pros

Many coworkers are friendly, overall I enjoy the work itself. Great discount of 20% and decent benefits.

Cons

Management is disorganized with a mob mentality, if you're on the "family" you get away with everything including repeated no call no shows whilst other employees are automatically terminated for such behavior. Until you're in management expect to work your back end off with little to no recognition and even less money, if you somehow do move up to management expect to be frequently transferred between locations (even locations hours away) with less than a weeks notice (of course this won't happen if you're a favorite of your DM) The company is cheap, corporate management rude and work loads stressful. Expect to have permanent joint damage, constantly asked to do 2 to 4 man lifts on your own, more often than not you'll be asked to move 2ton pallets with a hand jack (rated at less than that weight) or carry out large awkward items by yourself (gazebos and grills for example) This place is an OSHA nightmare, sharp rusty shelves, outdated equipment, expired food that corporate insists is still safe to sell, no proper safety equipment, overloaded (and collapsing) aisles, unsafe heat levels in summer and cold in winter due to faulty hvac and no control over thermostats (corporate controls temperatures from RI to save money) If your store loses power expect to be forced to stock shelves in the dark by flashlight.

Pros

They have a good recycling policy.

Cons

This was the most horrible experience of my life. They gave me employee of the month, then three weeks later fired me with no reasoning. The only thing they had was that I was late/absent too frequently nearly a year before because my only transportation was via a very unreliable taxi service. In the 8 or so months since I had acquired reliable transportation I wasn't late once and only had a single absence, and lateness/absences from the prior year were allegedly "forgiven" according to their policy. They couldn't tell me who had actually made the decision; one manager told me it was them and one said that it was corporate. Then they said it was a "mathematical equation", which was a blatant LIE because there were others who had many more absences than myself. I worked there for nearly two years and was never spoken to once about poor job performance, only commended. I did my best, was well-liked by other employees and was a hard-worker. Unfortunately, I live in a state which does not protect employees against unjust firing, so I could do nothing about it. They are also very sexist. If you are a woman and ask to work on the floor or on freight, forget about it, you'll be on register most of the time unless you like folding clothes. A manager literally told me that she'd "prefer a man to be out on the floor". I wasn't hired a strictly "cashier", I was a "sales associate", the same as the males who they had on the floor most of the time. I can only name 1 or 2 out of the 15+/- people that I know who have quit / been fired that have had a positive experience there. I can't say that this is the case for all OSJL stores.

Pros

Your coworkers and *some* managers are great to work with. The hours were not terrible. And they provide health insurance (pay 1/2 the first year, and pay in full after 1 year) for full time employees.

Cons

Most management is unhelpful, condescending, and not held accountable. The home office does nothing to make the store experience a good one. They have unwaiveringly adopted "the customer is always right" frame of mind, but has so many in store policies that they expect store employees to follow until a customer complains to the home office and they get their way making the in store staff seem uneducated. The pay is not great. They have so many policies and standards that are made nearly impossible to keep up with. They have "planograms" that they rarely have stock to fill.
