Pros

Incredibly collaborative environment that presents constant opportunities to learn. Optiver gives young employees a chance to make a serious difference within an industry leading firm. The built in support system of extremely intelligent technical professionals helps members throughout IT learn to act in principled ways, leading to a stable, reliable IT infrastructure. The work is engaging, challenging, and rewarding. That, coupled with the benefits and workplace perks make this a great place to work.

Cons

Very few cons come to mind.

One of the best

Pros

Junior level (<5 years) compensation is extremely competitive. The best (or at least top 3) on most products that we trade. Smart people with not that much ego. Pretty transparent bonus structure encourages people to help each other, promoting a friendly culture compared to other silo-ed firms (etc. Jump)

Cons

Not that much upside for the best guys - some talented traders are moving to other competitors to get paid more. In contrast, there are also some people who can't get paid not even half of what they get paid at Optiver if they leave, hence lowering the morale. Not much incentive for shareholders to take risk (e.g. exploring new products - cryptos, equity options, swaps and swaptions, etc) The best traders don't always make the best managers (see what happened at Intel vs IBM), but there is no choice because managers get paid more. Reviews are getting little obscure as traders get more specialized, and its hard to compare apples and oranges.

Pros

- People figure out how to own and solve problems, aren't told how to solve them from top down - Great people (traders and engineers) to work with, respectful environment even when chaotic, smart people who leave egos at the door - High pay, benefits - Work/life balance, even in senior roles - Promotions/bonuses based on merit, not longevity or connections - As an engineer, you have the resources to build really well-engineered systems

Cons

- Very competitive industry, a solution that worked last year needs to be improved constantly to work next year, never done solving a problem, moving target - Hard to measure improvements to systems in constantly changing market - Sometimes decide to throw away code you worked hard on, can be tough
