Pros

The people will work their tails off if you treat them right.

Cons

All of the management team, if you want to be stabbed in the back repeatedly, this is the job for you. Upper level managers that cannot even form complete sentences, yet get promoted because of who they drink with and who their daddy is. The union isn't much better, filing frivilous grievances just to get out of doing their jobs on the floor. It's a real bad atmosphere.

Pros

The subject matter is interesting, you learn a lot about the DoD acquisition process and requirements.

Cons

Pay is very low compared to other defense companies. In my opinion the core competencies of this company are very low tech and focused on integrating and assembling trucks. In my opinion career progression is very slow with low emphasis, you have to be your own strong advocate and you walk the sensitive line of being the ‘squeaky wheel’ and hurting yourself. However, if you don’t advocate for yourself you will stagnate. Yearly raises are very low and only seem to get lower. Some departments seem to be dead ends, and suffer from very poor and unprofessional management. I have seen some of the best engineers I know be treated poorly by this company and have to walk out the door. From my perspective this company seems to know they are ‘the only game in town’ when it comes to defense vehicles and as a result they don’t compete on salary, job titles or roles. If you choose to work here my advice would be to do it early in your career, stay for a few years to get exposure and build your resume, don’t put down any roots and move on to something else. That said, there are some interesting experiences to be had!

Pros

Oshkosh offers great benefits, including health and life insurance, a good 401k structure, excellent PTO, and for some, a flexible work environment. Knowing your company designs, produces, delivers, and services vehicles that save lives around the world is just icing on the cake.

Cons

While there are good people at the top, and the company's "People First" initiative has led to improvements, Oshkosh's hierarchical nature can make the organization confusing and difficult to navigate in certain circumstances. This mentioned hierarchical nature might be due, in part, to the company's long history and well-established chain of command, which can both be seen as positive things.
