Great company, misguided management

Pros

If you are lucky enough to get a full-time job here, the benefits are second to none. PTO is exceptional, even from the beginning, and health/dental plans are great.

Cons

Otsuka seems to be having difficulties transitioning to becoming a larger company. They do not want to increase head count at any of their locations, even though the workload (and budget of company) have doubled in recent years. Instead, contractors have been hired to increase head count and replace employees recently laid off, which has had a negative effect on employee morale.

Pros

Decent compensation and benefits (but that will only last until Abilify goes off patent protection in the US and also no stock options...)

Cons

A very unique and chaotic corporate family: corporate culture is the worse possible mix of Japanese and US culture. Pressure to perform due to the looming Abilify patent cliff. Inefficiencies are due to duplication, overlapping, and unclear roles and responsibilities because leadership is either not interested or not experienced in running complex R&D operations. Japan HQ is applying the GE corporate model to its US subsidiaries but this only results in more pressure to perform and does not solve structural/operational issues. People are expected to be accessible 24/7 and face-time is important hence expect limited work-life balance.
