Pros

Decent level of flexibility and independence is given to employees responsible for profit generation.

Cons

Sometimes high expectations are given without tangible support or guidance. Almost like a double-edged sword. Employee talent can be underdeveloped as they can end up spending an inordinate amount of time working on something less ideal just because it's useful for someone higher up.

Thanks for taking the time to provide a review about your time at PEAK6. It’s good to hear that you felt empowered. I agree that we have high expectations for people and we do want people to work in a self-directed way. We want to give people space to think things through so there is a balance with giving too much guidance or we don’t see independent thinking. I’m disappointed that you feel that either you (or others) wasted time on something that wasn’t clear if it was useful. I’d hope situations like this trigger a question for someone to ask how something might be used. The answer could be that it is really important and it wasn’t explained well upfront; or it could be that it’s an old report and isn’t used and based on someone pushing to make better we don’t need it any more. If you have any other specific thoughts please feel free to reach out directly to me at bgoldberg@peak6.com. Thanks, Brad

Pros

Decent location, well stocked kitchen, nice mid-level people to work with.

Cons

In full transparency I worked for OptionsHouse on the IT side for just over a year. I found this to be a tough review to write because from the folks I worked with at the mid-level management to individual contributor perspective, they actual had/have great talent. In fact, since I've left the firm, I've tried to poach a few as a testament to said talent. However there is no denying there is something fundamentally wrong with this place. The turnover is shockingly high and don't think this is all driven from people leaving on their own accord. More than a large handful of times, in my short year with the company, there would be firings/ layoffs, many times more than one person at a time. In fact it got so bad, on Fridays people would be looking over their shoulder for tap to go talk to a manager and HR person and then they were gone come Monday morning. Within the IT department I found the leadership very unwilling to introduce newer and efficient processes. One meeting in particular I tried to convince the testing lead of doing things a different, and what many in the industry consider more modern approach to software development and test, only to be asked before I could even start... 'why do you feel like we're so terrible at our jobs'. This is not the best way to start a meeting where you intend to collaborate, however I feel sums up my entire experience perfectly. Layer on top of that the rampant 'nepotism' 10,000lbs gorilla hanging over the place... At some point you get tired of beating your head against the wall and seek out a firm where you feel like they are willing to change and innovate fairly. All in all I would pass on this firm until there is enough evidence that things have truly changed for the better.

I’m sorry to hear you were unhappy during your time at OptionsHouse. General Atlantic bought OptionsHouse almost two years ago, so I seems like its been a while since you worked at a PEAK6 company. We always try to be open to new ideas and new ways to do things, and am disppoitned this wasn’t your experience at OptionsHouse. I hope you found a rewarding position where you are happier now. If you have any thoughts you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at bgoldberg@peak6.com. Thanks, Brad

Pros

The people they hire, at least in Tech, are among the best of the best and you can't help but improve your own skill set by being around them. There's a lot of exposure to new technologies on the cutting edge of the industry, which is also a great opportunity for growth in one's own skill set. The perks of working at Peak6 are a huge plus in my book: company-sponsored sports teams, snacks in the break room, regular team outings to restaurants, etc. Also, every year they have an annual party that's a blast. All this leads to an environment where you like your coworkers like they're your friends, and many of them are friends outside of work.

Cons

They seem to be having a big problem with employee retention in Tech. I wish I knew exactly why it was, but there's a lot of people that have been leaving lately because they feel like they're doing menial, thankless jobs, and management isn't making a concerted effort to fix the issue.

Thanks — it’s encouraging to hear your positive feedback about our tech team. The collaborative, spirited environment you describe is a definitely part of our culture we strive for, so it’s good to hear it works for you. I’m interested in your thoughts around retention and why you think people might have left PEAK6. It seems like your primary concern is with support. I would like to understand more around the root of this issue and what you think we need to address. If you have insights here around why people feel like they aren’t doing meaningful work, I would really like to hear them. Please reach out to me so we can fix any issues with the support team or project prioritization that might be contributing to attrition. Thanks, Ryan Pratt
