Pros

Clean and secure place to work.

Cons

Very political. Executive secretaries appeared to have the fast track to promotion over capable white collar middle aged graduates with years of experience. Culture was anal and very PC. Rigid HR policies were followed to a tee. If you are looking for a real raise after a few years, good luck. After five years, I was making roughly the same amount... just the standard little cost of living bump. Get any promises in writing before you start. The promises for educational financial support given by HR were never honored by management once hired. They hire and fire and then hire back at a lower rate too I noticed. Imho, employees are viewed as a resource to be harvested: maximum value for the lowest cost and they are very good at that.

Pros

A mostly stable company with a 140 year history. For those lucky enough to work in the Newport building, watching the sun set over Catalina from your cubicle. They are mostly reluctant to lay people off, although I'm seeing a few references here to Black Thursday, when over 150 people were laid off without warning.

Cons

In the Life Division, an extraordinary culture of worker drones carrying unqualified and untrustworthy managers and supervisors, coupled with a refusal to promote from within. For some, a salary far below market standard and no recognition of extra efforts. Contemptuous treatment of employees.
