Pros

-Perks are solid. Lots of PTO, and work schedules are fairly flexible. Lots of talk about coffee -Pay is fairly high by industry standards -Work is as interesting as print management can be -Great company if you prioritize work/life balance

Cons

-Company is very Australia-centric. Great if you live in Australia, bad if you live somewhere else -Borderline toxic positivity -Writing blogs and leading initiatives (you'll hear this word attached to pretty much anything) gets you ahead, knowing your job and working hard won't get you much -Management at all levels is a clique, and probably one you won't get into. A small group of individuals in cahoots with senior management make 90% of the decisions, even if they don't hold formal leadership roles within the org. The "non-hierarchial" structure really just means you need to be part of the in-group to have any kind of influence -Very easy to get sidelined if you disagree with leadership. Execs have clear favorites that have been tagged as the future of the company

Thank you for taking the time to submit your feedback. I’m really glad to hear you appreciate the balance between your work and home life at PaperCut, as well as the other benefits that we offer. I’d also like to thank you for your contribution to the business over the years. I sincerely apologise for the fact that you feel as though your voice isn’t adequately heard across the whole of PaperCut. As you mentioned, these issues have arisen from how leadership and decision making is clarified in PaperCut, which has resulted in the perception of an “in-group” of influential figures across the business. I recognise that PaperCutters have had similar experiences in all of our regions. Increasing our awareness of how decision-making processes affect and are perceived by employees is an ongoing lesson for PaperCut as we scale and change. While these are important areas for improvement, I do believe that we are actively taking responsibility for recognising, investigating, and improving them moving forward. We are doing this through our ongoing DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) work, the psychological safety program, and the introduction of our new leadership groups with the aim to better define and diversify decision-making. I hope that these steps that we are taking will provide many more opportunities for your voice to be heard and become more influential. I also want to recognise your point about borderline toxic positivity. As ‘Caring’ is one of our core values as a business, we do think it’s vital to celebrate successes and special events as they occur, which may at times contribute to a culture of pressured positivity. Here, as well, we need to find the right balance, and we are dedicated to doing this by bringing attention to the issue, acknowledging that celebrations take many forms and inviting a variety of different communication styles to contribute. We're learning there are various approaches we need to apply to suit a wide range of styles but ultimately do so with good intentions. Again, thank you for your contribution to PaperCut over the years. I’d be happy to catch up remotely or chat via email if you’d like to discuss further. In addition, if you'd prefer to retain your anonymity from me or others across PaperCut, Matt Doran is more than happy to offer his time to hear about your experiences in more depth. - Chris

Pros

Good perks - salary, bonus, you can get away with doing not a lot

Cons

Appalling management. Very deceitful despite what they promote in their incessant blog posts. This is a company where your success is based solely on your ability to suck it up and agree with the “in group”. The CEO is a complete narcissist who believes he knows more about everything than anyone else. Very difficult to work with.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It is upsetting to hear that your experience of working with some at PaperCut, myself especially, has been so frustrating for you. My goal has always been for PaperCut to be a place where everyone feels like their voice is heard, 'anyone can talk to anyone' (one of our 5 core principles) and where people can learn, grow and have opportunities across many areas of the business. So, I sincerely apologise for the fact that you feel that your success is solely determined by your agreeability with others. I certainly plan to reflect on the comments that you've made about me personally and recognise that this may take some time to think over and get to the bottom of. I will admit that I am very passionate about empowering emerging leaders in PaperCut, and in my efforts to distribute decision making amongst these people, I can see how the perception of “in-groups” can form. I am also saddened to hear that your experience of management is that we come across as "deceitful" and "false". Given the other comments that make up your review I can see how this has become your reality. I believe that the first step towards resolving these issues starts with understanding how we can create a workplace where everyone feels confident that their opinions and feedback will be genuinely heard. This is particularly important now as we've gone through some large(ish) way-of-working changes with the objective of empowering more PaperCutters to be decision makers. With change comes challenges, and the need for people to be able to express how change impacts them. This is why we've recently kicked off our psychological safety programme and I am looking forward to seeing it mature and uncover some actionable outcomes that will help us. These findings may take time to collate and more time to resolve, however, I firmly believe that we’re heading in the right direction - an environment where all voices can be heard just as much as each other. Thank you for your contribution over your time at PaperCut. If you’d like to reach out to discuss further, I’d be happy to catch up for a coffee or to chat with you via email. In addition, if you'd prefer to retain your anonymity from me or others more broadly in PaperCut, either Matt or Mark on our advisory board are more than happy to offer their time to hear about your experiences in more depth, so I would encourage you to reach out to them as well. - Chris
