Pros

Work from home or from the office, great colleagues, snacks and drinks when you're in the office. Regular Q&A with the leadership team to stay in touch with what is happening in the company as well as ask any questions we may have. Well known app with a global presence (North America and Europe) which opens up opportunities for working abroad.

Cons

Its definitely a tough time for PBP. No new products in a long time and, in the mobile payment industry, PBP is not as competitive as they like to think. Legacy products are not being replaced, new features and products are constantly pushed down the road map which makes managing client expectations very exhausting. Sales team obviously struggles with selling PBP. Priorities are all over. Regular outages. Management wants to do well but with a very high level of employee turnover, it seems that we're constantly training new hire to learn the product instead of having people who have the industry knowledge and experience to actually make a difference. Vacation is at 3 weeks and no matter how many times management will tell us how generous that is, we all know that it's actually below industry standards and below what other similar companies offer. (Parkmobile for example) In addition, vacation days don't increase with seniority, so unless you're promoted to a manager role, you will have 3 weeks vacation until you retire. I don't believe that PBP is competitive enough in that aspect to attract and keep top talents.

Pros

Management is nice and they really do try hard to do what they can with what they have. The people & culture team is second to none.

Cons

Leadership has known in the past that there isn’t clear focus. They tried to fix it by defining OKRs but they created like 40 key results, and then they have these massive side chunks of work that have nothing to do with the OKRs. Priorities constantly shift. The team is underfunded and understaffed for what they want to do. They have this monolith that they’re obsessed with decoupling. Application is fragile and there are a lot of outages. When there’s an outage all management says is how bad it is.

Thank you for providing us with your feedback. Last year, we formalized OKRs to help achieve our company objectives. This year we continue to refine our process to be both more disciplined, inclusive and tempering of our enthusiastic aspirations in the scoping of respective divisional and individual objectives, as they cascade from our business strategy. We look forward to you seeing the positive results of our efforts in the very near future. We appreciate your constructive feedback and if you’re open to a conversation, we’d love to learn more about your experience. Please reach us at people@paybyphone.com

Pros

- Actively working towards a future tech stack in AWS, and lofty goals for small to medium sized growth. - Engineering Managers are technically very smart and often take on-call responsibility for the team - Financial backing from Volkswagon - CEO clearly letting us know that money is not an issue for anything that will help us be successful - Pay is above average for Vancouver - Flexible work/life balance - Fairly good development best practices - Great brand, worldwide footprint - Politics are surprisingly not too much of an issue

Cons

- Monolithic Oracle Database :( blocking a lot of - Lack of deliberate mentorship/coaching - Too much information in the hands of few - Generally understaffed (mainly because of the lacklustre talent pool in Vancouver) - Apathy towards proactively fixing issues with a sense of urgency, can be elitist at times - Extreme administrative overhead (things take a long time to complete) due to non-scalable architecture, reliance on tribal knowledge, little or no documentation and process. - Communication in general is poor
