What a demoralizing career experience

Pros

There are some very talented, hardworking employees at PerkinElmer. I have learned much from our senior, non-managerial staff, that has greatly enhanced my knowledge in the industry. Other than individual contributors (which are either being terminated or running for the hills), there is not a positive attribute to the “company” in general.

Cons

Where should I start? An environment of blind obedience and mind numbing incompetence is the best way to describe the “leadership” of this organization. From the bottom to the top, no need to apply if you have the desire to make a marked improvement to the organization or have the ability to have a logical thought. From the field to the offices in Shelton, the work culture is toxic. Between the backdrop of constant layoff, managers trying to cover their own back by blaming the working minions for their poor decisions, questionable ethnics, and the lowest quality products in the industry—You have a workforce that’s only goal is to find a better career. Sorry to be negative, I wish someone would have painted this picture for me 5 years ago before I left an industry leader to join the ranks at this “dog and pony show”. It has gotten so bad at this organization there have been days I just cannot make myself come to work: I got to the office, pulled in, sat in my car: watched others walk in with heads down, looks of misery on their faces, and just called in a PTO day.

Once one of the country's greatest companies.

Pros

The scientists, engineers and technicians are great to work with and very talented.

Cons

PerkinElmer was once one of this country’s greatest companies. It has a rich history of innovation and once did great things for both the country and humanity. But that history is long gone at this point. I do not see much future under New Mountain Capital. Management in the Shelton location simply doesn't exist. Everyone good has left, been fired, or let go due to downsizing. No one works in the office anymore above a Director level. Every person in an executive role works remotely. During my tenure, HR never existed in person, a vital role to every business. This is one of those companies that has taken the work from home concept and dialed it up to 11. The only people who are in the office are the people who design and build the product. Meanwhile, the remaining management in the building is horrible. There is zero diversity, with one specific demographic occupying every level of management. The development and engineering department is run by one person, who is the filter to upper level management. As a result (due to every executive working remotely at their home) everybody outside of the facility is completely unaware of just how bad the organization is being run. This person is a bad leader, a bad mentor, and the worse engineer I have ever worked with. The best term I have for them is incompetent. There is zero empathy or understanding for anyone who may be eccentric or have special needs. The expectations are unrealistic, and they rule by bullying. In hindsight, I realize that the bullying started at the job interview and continued throughout my complete tenure. The employees are only considered a resource meant to be consumed and exploited.

Pros

Easy work anf people are nice

Cons

Management is only cares about growth numbers, took away half of 401k contribution, took away quarterly bonus, new bonus structure based on EBITA, and leadership is not transparent about information.
