Pros

- benefits are good - it is a decent part time job for a student, parent, etc - Groomers are paid very well and their training is paid for by PetSmart - can make professional contact with veterinarians and their staff if that is your career goal - discount is ok (15%), twice a year they give you a 30% off coupon - if you have no formal eduction or experience, you can still move up here quite easily - most of the employees are good people who really do care about animals

Cons

- management compensation is below other big box retailers - HR and CareLine is not responsive to abuse occurring from upper management - there is a lot of nonsense checklists, print outs, and other busy work that is tailored to managers with no experience in the retail industry. It can be very frustrating if you are organized and have experience in a larger, higher volume retailer. - they have a manager hierarchy which creates a lot of friction, rather than teamwork - hours can be ridiculous depending on your store's truck schedule. A typical opening manager shift can be 2am - Noon. I have been scheduled 12pm-10pm one day and 3am-1pm the next, with a 30 minute commute each way. - there is a lot of waste. If you are someone that supports green initiative, you will be very upset at the amount of waste PetSmart produces. 1) They are constantly changing the prices and plan-o-grams 2) They make you print everything and put it in a binder, even though you can access it from the computer 3) any product that is damaged, they destroy and throw it out. No discount, No donation, Garbage Only and 4) They switched from plastic totes to cardboard boxes for their deliveries last year. They used to get the product in plastic totes and send them back to the warehouse on the next truck. Now the cardboard dumpster overflows every truck day and they have to wait for it to be emptied to even dispose of all the packaging from one truck. (there are 3-6 trucks a week depending on store size) - Finally, if you have Bachelors degree in Business and you are picking up dog feces, it just doesn't sit right. At least for me it didn't.

Pros

Working with owners and their pets Benefits packages Base hourly pay provided incase of low commissions Decent equipment provided Vacation offered to full-time employees Easy computer program for scheduling and checking in dogs

Cons

High turnover in management Management is uncaring of staff members as people Unrealistic sales goals Lots of paperwork to have done daily and weekly in between grooming the 8 dogs a day minimum that they want you to do. Plus, 3 weekly call logs to be completed in 4 days. One call log that requires you to call a customer 3 times before leaving a message, if they don't answer. This is even as a regular groomer and not a salon manager. Too much emphasis on sales and not enough on wellness of employees and pets. Salon manager at this specific location was horrible at communicating. She also displayed favortism towards certain employees. She was unreasonable with giving time off. She mixed her personal life with work. Managers never recognize good work done, but are always quick to write you up for anything done wrong. (i.e. not achieving sales goals) Management will make you feel expendable even if you've worked for the company for years.

Pros

There are not many other good paying corportate jobs in Phoenix. Other than Dillards Petsmart is the ONLY retail corporate. The corporate office is nice, clean, bright. Caefe and Covered parking for everyone a big plus when it's 115 degrees outside. Employees are provided with good tools to do their jobs. Depeding on your grade level, you sometimes get to travel on corporate Jet- a real treat.

Cons

Most of the Managers and Directors are from other companies- who were nasty places to work. (.e backstabbing click-ish retail) . They comment on how much friendlier Petsmart is. However they are changing the culture- and bringing those "not best practices in". It has become much of a place where your title matters --more a place where certain people will only talk to you if you are a certain grade. The company is top heavy with Directors and VPs, who are not interested in what those below them are doing. They spend all of their time with eachother- and call it leadership. You must be very good at politics to survive. You must be popular to be considered capable. Demotions are becoming more common, and oddly this has not been seen a reflection of poor leaders, failing to develop teiur people, but blamed on the people themselves .
