Pros

Managers do believe in praise, but I think that is location specific. If you like animals. this is the place to work. Pay is a dollar or so above minimum.

Cons

If you have a busy location, it can be really fast paced. This store was usually understaffed. Dealing with crazy pet lovers wasn't something I looked foreword to.

Pros

If you're wanting to work at Petsmart, hopefully you should have a very decent tolerance with animals. I took this job fresh out of high school to make some extra cash for further studies and college. And that's the only thing I would recommend why to work here. The pay isn't terrible, but not sustainable either. The entire pet care department is friendly and helpful. We all learn off of each other and gradually improve. I just wish the same applied to the other departments. 99 percent of the employees are very friendly. Most of the work gets done come closing time and it's not that stressful, even on the weekend rush.

Cons

Our management kept changing so we had to deal with every little quirk that came along with them. For example in pet care, our former store manager insisted we keep cricket bags stocked at all times (To avoid stopping for customers to count crickets) but now with the latest manager, he could care less. However, he wants everything faced and all products touching the end of the shelf. It's just hard to keep up with all these changes and then having the new management expect us to cater to their every whim. We have two managers that came from the same previous location (In order to "straighten our store out" no doubt) and are very unhelpful. One of the new managers called the previous store manager a "moron" and said all of us employees need to be retrained. 10 minutes later she then took a smoke break. Any questions or concerns I had never went by them, but instead the pet care manager.

Pros

You get to work with animals... PetSmart is also one of few companies that partner with the humane society and other animal shelters to help find dogs and cats homes vs. selling puppy mill animals.

Cons

There are probably 4 managers on duty during the day and 3 at night... There's no communication between any of them ever. You get told to do the same thing over-and-over again - even if the task has been completed. If you ask for a day off, make sure you tell ALL of the managers you can... as there will be one who forgets and writes you up for not coming into work without notice. Expect to be called in on days you have off and called to not show up for days your scheduled (chances are you'll show up for work and they'll send you home an hour in (of your eight hour shift) after you arrive). Don't expect a steady money flow at all... The training for the job (especially to work in the pet hotel) is sub-standard. Many of the new hires have never owned a dog and are now expected to be able to break up a fight... One manager allowed a Labrador that had bitten several other dogs ( sometimes needing stitches, an eye patch, and ointments) to come back every day (as this made them money). When it comes to the time they don't need you... be expected to be written up for "walking slow" "poor communication" and various other things you did not do (this usually makes the employees quit) - their employee turnover rate is ridiculous. I'm lucky to still be working there... but not happy about it. Don't expect to work and go to school at the same time either.
