Pros

The "Pro-Associate Philosophy" is a fundamental part of the way management interacts with associates, and a constitutionally positive and progressive work environment is the result. Strong benefits package for full-time associates including PTO, insurance at quite competitive rates, a stock option, 401(k) with matching, tuition reimbursement, and on and on. Promotes aggressively from within. Relatively quick course-correction for such a large corporation when dealt constructive feedback by outside parties or their own ranks.

Cons

Corporate factions do not act as if unified. Labor, Marketing, Supply Chain, and HR seem to have no grasp on what it takes to execute what they ask. It's not uncommon to see Labor saving the company money by ruthlessly slashing payroll, while Marketing aims to drive profit by punching up promotions that require huge manpower. Pay for management is well below that of other companies with similar or lesser requirements for their leadership, although the positive work environment in some ways makes this less of a glaring drawback.

Pros

WONDERFUL customers, the ability to genuinely relate to your clientele and meet their pets. Having the product knowledge as well as the right products in stock to offer them realistic solutions to problems and have them come back in to thank you because your advice made a huge difference! Having customers that truly appreciate great customer service and that will be loyal based on the level of service they can count on from you and your staff.

Cons

Focus all your attention and CARE for your customers (Pet Parents)!!! Now as you're doing this get all stock out, sign and price tag the store, then pull down all the price tags in a week while you put up new sale tags then pull em down again three days later to put up new ones. Hire and train new people while you make sure all the veteran employees take their never ending mandatory trainings on kitty litter and pooper scoopers but remember the customer comes first even though you have to leave the floor to accomplish this and hey, don't go over payroll (which more payroll would make too much sense because you could actually divide and conquer and get everything done) and if you miss your training goals you will have to be on a conference call which guess what......takes you off of the floor from selling kitty litter and pooper scoopers. ::: Check your never ending barrage of "CASE" messages which is Corporates Micro-Management Tool to 'to-do' list you into eternity:::::::....and they track that too so if you don't do everything in THEIR timeframe (while you devote all your time to customer service, of course....why are we here again? oh yes, to help customers buy the right products/services for their pets,) then you'll hear about it on a conference call. Even with all of that said I am not sure I fully explained how unbalanced their corporate leadership is. People at corporate must justify their jobs by coming up with new tasks to put in CASE without any perspective on how much the store managers are already contending with.

Pros

FRIENDLY PEOPLE. There are some genuinely nice human beings working within PetSmart and I really can't stress that enough. "Pet people" are good people, and that mostly proves true up until you start dealing with corporate and home office... If your tired of cold, unfriendly retail managers or co workers and are looking for a friendlier environment, then PetSmart may somewhat rekindle your faith in humanity. Note: I have worked for PetSmart for nearly three years now and at four differing locations and I can tell you that no two store sites are the same. each location has its own culture and "vibe". I have seen them all: the good the bad, and the ugly, so it pays to get to know staff of a store site if you can before working there. It can be the difference between night and day. Working along side PetSmart partnered pet charities like: the Humane society, can prove to be one of the most rewarding experiences one can have while working with this company. One most keep in mind that all such ventures are strictly voluntary with out monetary reward and must be perused by ones own volition as no member of Pet smarts management will direct you toward such duties.

Cons

Despite the company's focus on pet adoptions, fighting euthanasia, and focus on long term pet health, at its core it is nothing more then a retail company that treats and rewards its ground floor employees poorly. When working at PetSmart, one can come to expect: low pay, no health benefits, constantly fluctuating work hours with no schedule consistency, and little room to move up with in the organization. Some negative factors are: Low wages (minimum wage up to about $9.50) along with .10 cent incremental yearly raises. Random, computer generated, schedule that managers are seemingly at the mercy of, no matter how asinine the out come of it is. not only is the employee schedule generated at random, but its often posted late with in the week (like Friday), giving one absolutely no time to plan for family or home life. Swing shifts are expected to be performed by everyone as well at a moments notice. so for example, you could be working with animals in Pet Care from 4pm to 10pm and then be expected to come back into work at 5am the "following" night and perform stock. For a company so focused upon humanitarian gestures, this move by them is surprisingly" inhuman."
