Pros

All pros have expired over the last 6 months. I was loyal to the end to this firm, now looking elsewhere. (Don’t read this as a I am some sort of a pissed employee about a bonus or something; I actually don’t care about the money).

Cons

Politically driven management, caring more about looking good to their boss than doing what is good for the firm. This used to be an amazing place to work. As returns have been great, the firm started to aggressively expand. However, instead of hiring brilliant engineers (or promoting existing ones), the firm decided to hire managers. These managers have created an environment where kissing a** and saying “what sounds good” instead of driving ideas / initiatives to improve the products. Seems like the goal is for these managers to make as much money as possible (via bonuses) while the iron is still hot.

Pros

Generous 401K, kind management access to a lot of data sets, access to professional lectures.

Cons

The interaction between PM and his team is not standard. Teams are organized along racial and linguistic lines, which is not a problem if you are in the right team. Very little opportunity to grow if you are working for a PM. The PM has no incentive to let you grow and become an independent PM. The teams are silod and there are a lot of secrets even between the team members. This use to be a great place, but recent years saw a rapid hiring which broke down the structure.

Thank you for writing a review of your experience at Cubist. We’re disappointed that you believe your experience fell short of our Mission and Values, but I’m also surprised. Cubist employees hail from more than 20 countries and speak many languages. It’s common to hear French, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and Greek – as well as English – at Cubist, and often in the same team. Our teams are organized by their Portfolio Managers (PMs) and the only criteria they care about is the talent of new team members, nothing else. You note the interactions “between PM and his team is not standard,” to which I respond, of course they aren’t: our very diversity of employees not only reflects national origins and languages, but management styles, too. We think diversity is a strength and hope you do too, but I can point out two things that are universal across every team, and the whole Firm. First, our Mission is “To be the industry’s premier asset management firm through delivering superior risk-adjusted returns, adhering to the highest ethical standards and offering the greatest opportunities to the industry’s brightest talent,” and we measure ourselves against it every day. Second, as part of that Mission, we seek to nurture our talent and we have a carefully defined career path at Point72. At Point72, 70% of our PMs started as Analysts. At Cubist, a handful have. We regret this turned out to not be the place for you, but given the low turnover rate at Point72 – our PMs are here on average twice as long as the industry average, even longer in Cubist – we think we’re on to something good at Cubist and Point72.

Run for the Hills

Pros

You will gain a lot of experience in a fast paced environment. Health insurance is covered by the firm. You will learn (if you are thick skinned) how to handle challenging personalities

Cons

Office politics completely run the show. Unfortunately your performance is evaluated more on face time and who you know rather than actual performance and results. From the very top down ego, unprofessionalism, and prejudgice are apparent. I have seen more than one *higher up* physically throw things across a room. More and more people have left/are leaving after spending many years there, while newer hires aren't sticking around longer than a year or two. Make a mistake? You will have someone actually scream at you in an open seating location rather than a private discussion. Do great work for several years? You'll receive a minimal raise (if any) and watch them hire a junior colleague at a higher salary than your current. Aside from the dysfunctional leadership, basic processes are falling apart and becoming less main streamed. Zero communication between teams. Cutthroat within your own team. Point72 has become chaos.
