All depends on your boss

Pros

Beautiful campus, fantastic wellness center, informal culture. Opportunities for growth and projects depend on your role and your boss. Decent benefits, pay is low in many areas. Some managers are truly the most fantastic people you will ever know.

Cons

Company is lacking vision and direction. Promega wants to be in every space, so there is a lot of investment in many different areas to gather a fraction of the market. This means huge numbers of projects. Some areas of the company are grossly understaffed. Company values airplanes over employees and functioning equipment. Some managers are autocratic, which has resulted in loss of good talent. The attitude is that everyone can be replaced. HR is powerless.

Better than most

Pros

Scientist quality is good. I have a lot of intellectual freedom and get a lot of scientific respect. Very flexible hours; friendly work environment. The CEO really wants this to be a good place to work and wants us to enjoy being there.

Cons

Very much a glass ceiling with regard to moving up. Favorites are played, and several of the current directors seem to be there because of who they know more than because of scientific ability. They are the most ruthless, and get rid of anyone under them who seems a threat. Which is rather bad, because they really need their contributions to compensate for their own failings. This is not true of all of the directors, and some are great to work for. There are some very toxic personalities there that are tolerated because of favoritism that goes nearly all the way to the top.
