Pros

If you're up for change, Protiviti can be an exciting place to work because you never know where you will find your niche. You may end up in a specific industry or service line you never imagined would be fulfilling.

Cons

Because everybody's path is different, it is very hard to compare employees. As a result, managers are forced to have monthly meetings to discuss consultants and seniors and how they can be scheduled based on specific skill sets. While this is a necessary evil of the industry, it creates the "Halo/Horn" effect where consultants and seniors are constantly judged. This creates an environment where promotions are self-fulfilling prophesies and some consultants will never be given an opportunity to succeed.

Pros

If you're looking to start a career or re-invent yourself Protiviti is the place to be. If however, you are looking to continue your career growth it is not the place for you. Protiviti has everything necessary to allow someone to build a solid career until you reach the Senior Manager level.

Cons

Once you achieve Senior Manager or Associate Director, you will unfortunately get a front row seat in witnessing the backstabbing, indecision, and confusion that is Protiviti's executive and MD leadership team(s). They have over diversified themselves to the point of complete confusion. If you need proof, look at the confusion associated with how they align themselves internally. They restructured 2 years ago and no one knew what it meant, they did it again last year by renaming all their services and no one knew who they reported to, now they are doing it again. That much change, leads me to think Protiviti no longer knows who they are, or what they want to be....this has resulted in MD's blazing their own trails, and operating individually. In my opinion, this is why they are experiencing success in pockets, and not across an entire service offering, they are in effect....not operating as a team, but as a series of small practices associated by name only.

Pros

You will work hard at Protiviti. You will travel. You will see a lot of different companies and learn a lot. You will also be on the road all the time, never be home, work 80+ hours a week, and be burned out all the time. You will do all the hard work and management will take all the credit. If you succeed though you will be promoted, and the pay, while not commensurate with the work level for the lower levels, certainly makes up for it at the management levels.

Cons

The biggest problem with Protiviti is it's office culture. It's barely a step above a frat house. The average new hire is hired based on how they fit this culture, not whether they have the experience and intelligence to succeed. One look at any of their office recruiting calendars will make this obviously - they make sure to hit all the local homecoming games and state schools, but completely ignore the good ones. I can't even tell you the number of racist and sexist comments I've heard from people. The workforce is only about 15% female, and they're usually treated with the sort of sexist attitudes that should have died decades ago. I honestly can't believe that there hasn't been a sexual harassment or discrimination lawsuit yet.
