BS jobs abound

Pros

Pay is good if you come from the outside.

Cons

Not all but many of the positions in my area are just BS jobs. They provide no value and can easily be performed by others that have little to do. Leadership is so focused on their bonus they can care less about the development of their caregivers or if these caregivers provide any real value to the organization. The mission is central to many of the lower level caregivers and only a requirement for most of management. They have regularly scheduled RIFs to remove members of the team that managers no longer want to manage. This is an excellent example of how the leaders lack leadership and are only there for their own advancement. So many great people have been shown the door over the years.

Pros

Staff is typically competent and team oriented.

Cons

Due to Providence buying St Joseph there is a major culture shift and many people leaving. It went from supportive to bureaucratic overnight. A major issues is there no longer HR on campus. All grievances including simple things like fixing an error on a paycheck goes through a call center that cannot directly forward you to HR (wherever they are). For example, it took 6 wks and SEVERAL attempts to get them to fix an error they made on my paycheck. This is a small example of the daily hurdles. Without HR it’s almost impossible to discuss pay, grievances, disability, etc. I quit due to the serious lack of support and lack of pay. For the same job at another hospital my pay went up $13k a year. The managers tell staff they can’t help because they too have no support.

Pros

Excellent pay, well-defined role as a group therapist, supports individuality and creativity in what you bring to the table, skilled, compassionate and professional coworkers

Cons

Big corporation, inconsistent culture/management between programs, very medical model (therapists often fall at the bottom of the totem pole, under social workers) I have worked on several of the area psychiatric units and have experienced variability unit-by-unit in terms of organization/flow/communication, advocacy/support /inclusion for therapy teams, and general culture. This is important to my work well-being so I have developed preferences for certain units. If My advice to any job seeker is to ask about this in the interviews, connect with an existing employee for an insider's perspective, and trust your instincts around "vibe."
