Good retirement, mediocre pay

Pros

Good for long-term security, if you are thinking about the future. Most stores run a tight ship and it is a company with a good reputation. The best stores know how to make the customer feel special, which is good for job security.

Cons

Corporate is reluctant to offer full-time (with the extra benefits that go along with it) to non-management personnel. They cite more flexibility in scheduling as their reason. Management acts as if there is an open-door policy, but they would rather you do not complain or "make suggestions".

Pros

If you plan to make it a career, they will consider this. there is some extra money in bonuses and stock after a year of employment. You meet some amazing people of all walks of life. Student to senior, and everything in between. Most job in publix are not too hard. College reimbursement if related to a career in publix. If you are lucky enough to get into the pharmacy, great hours and holidays off. For the rest of the store, you are not getting Easter, thanksgiving or Christmas off working for any other grocery store. Also, Christmas bonus for full timers rock (40 hours of pay). Us part timers got 8 hours pay Christmas bonus.

Cons

With all of these benefits, will you believe working for publix is hell on earth? No set schedule. Especially part timers. Sometimes you work till 1130, then open at 6am next day. I found requesting time off resulted in "punishment" of less hours and closing every night. I know some people are very happy, but the remainder are really not. There is no in between really. If you are a favorite, you can no call/no show countless times, be excessively late or sick, even get complaint after complaint with no major consequences. Unfortunately, the rest of us work really hard for little or no recognition. Our schedules are changed last min, and when this happened to me, I had plans, I was told "Well your plans are gonna change, arent they?". They never miss a chance to call you in, even on a class day, and if you tell them no, they put a guilt trip on you. Yet the people calling out sick never hear a word about "not being a team player" or "now we're screwed" If you are a student, limit yourself to one class or your hours will be severely cut. I understand availability, but class one night a week should not result in half hours of before you went back. And if you want to transfer, good luck. I had been trying to transfer for 2 years before I quit. They obviously kept hiring people. The one time they offered me something else, I would have had to quit school and it would be an additional job class, not a transfer. Yet they brought more and more people in. The kicker was a new front end employee was transferred to the bakery. I had wonderful attendance, willing to work if I possibly could, great customer service, stellar reviews, yet I was stuck breaking my back frying chicken- the hardest most dangerous job in publix! I quit to go to school full time! I dont want to risk ever having to go back there!

Pros

Benefits comparable industry-wide. Pay is also very competitive for the industry. More so for salaried associates rather than hourly associates. There is also a ridiculous amount of opportunity to have a 100K + a year job with little to no formal education. The time frame to reach management varies and isn't based on any specific departmental skill. You can reach SM position from any sub-department; CS, Deli, Meat, Grocery (which is the most difficult), Bakery, or Produce. The job is relatively easy though doing it well (no matter what you do) can prove challenging for people who; cannot provide good customer service, lack even marginal work ethic, lack follow through in terms of progressing their training and realizing their opportunities leading to positions of management. It's a family-like work environment in good ways such as supporting your growth with the company and in your personal life through community outreach programs like United Way. The job is also extremely hard to lose. Stability is a rarity these days and it requires a sub-par IQ to get fired from this job. Summary: Stock Options, Medical, Dental, 401k, enormous opportunity, four inventory bonuses a year, up to three weeks pay Christmas bonus (FT only -- which can be floated throughout the year), work-through vacations (if approved by management), prescription discount program, and as of recent, free Flu shots.

Cons

Management positions tend to be spoon-fed to any idiot who can pass a test. Training tends to come in the form of your manager dropping a questionnaire and an answer book in front of you and leaving you in the break room to complete it. Pay increases and decreases tend to be at the whim of your manager who more often than not has biased opinions towards you and it's usually seen on associate evaluations. Although this is not the "practice" Publix promotes -- it is something that can happen depending on the store you're at. Experience has taught me that due to certain lawsuits suffered by the company in passed years, you often wind up with dramatically under qualified, inexperienced people in management positions. Pressure to complete a nearly absurd amount of work in a very small amount of time does indeed exist. By measuring productivity through IPLH the inevitable result is goals that are virtually impossible to achieve. This leads to understaffed stores, empty shelves, low associate morale, and eventually dissatisfied customers. Being a family-like environment comes with it's downs as well; drama, fraternization, etc.
