Pros

Acceptable money for similar roles within the area.

Cons

Poor working atmosphere with very little team spirit or talent across the company. Incompetent and unqualified lower management in abundance. Higher level managers change too frequently and seemingly have no impact or awareness of the business. Departments working in conflict rather than unison. Integrity is no longer a core value.

Pros

With the backing of one of the most respected car breakdown services in the UK you represent the company as a self-employed agent. The RAC provide basic training at their Head Office, all uniform and materials and paid-for sites from which to operate - usually supermarkets, motorway service areas, town centres etc. There is a degree of freedom in hours of work, given that they have an expectation of results. They also give ongoing training and coaching and a payment system based on commission only which is competitive. You become part of a dedicated team and there is a lot of buddy support. The work gives you freedom and self-management opportunities not often experienced today.

Cons

Working conditions can be unpleasant in the winter months if you find yourself outdoors. Sales are becoming harder to get as banks, insurance companies, new car deals etc., all try to offer competitive products. Being self-employed you need to allow for unpaid sick leave, pension and holidays and ensure that you are in compliance with income tax payments. You also have to provide your own transport for which you get no travel expenses.
