Don't be fooled

Pros

Extremely difficult to identify any current pros. This organization was on a path of greatness no more than 1-2 years ago. Since then, the organization has struggled to maintain profitability, morale, structure, and leadership alignment.

Cons

1. Non-competitive salaries - Pay structure is by levels ($80k, $110k, $150k, etc.,). It is truly disappointing, especially during a time of inflation and increased interest rates. 2. Hiring Freeze - What legitimate organization is under a hiring freeze during one the most employee friendly hiring times in US history? This organization has been under a strict freeze for nearly a year, during a time in which top talent is widely available. Sure sign of a start-up on the brink of selling or going under. 3. Toxic Working Environment - This comes down to organizational maturity. When you raise a risk, be prepared to be replaced 4. Weak leadership - Not too much to say here. Weak across the board. Held hostage by their own emotions, poor decision making, and a failure to address and mitigate legitimate risks. 5. Don't live up to commitment's - The organization will lure you in by offering you a 13.6% bonus. You'll never receive 13.6%, let alone any bonus at all. They will also offer you equity. This organization was planning to go IPO two years ago. Two years later, no plan in sight.

Dysfunctional Culture

Pros

The work they are doing is fascinating. There are pockets of incredible visionaries and managers.

Cons

The culture is incredibly dysfunctional. For starters, there are almost no women or African Americans in positions of leadership. That was my first red flag. Second, they don’t let there employees eat unless it’s approved REEF food (meaning you bought it from a vendor attached to REEF). For a while, employees weren’t even allowed to bring in their own food from home. This policy changed towards the end of my time but we still couldn’t bring in a salad or granola bar from even a grocery store without hiding it in another container from home. They pay most of their staff low salaries and then expect them to order $15 lunches every day. It was insane and borderline unethical in my opinion. On top of that, we were expected to work 12 hours a day and sometimes on weekends. It was frowned upon to take your two weeks of paid vacation. Departments were competitive with each other instead of collaborative. Management didn’t speak to each other or about each other with any respect. While I’d love to see many of the ideas at REEF brought to life, the cultural dysfunction there made it not worth it for me.

Pros

Excited features in the beginning like company growth and selling that the company culture is great. But in the end, these are two things that become apparent are part of the problem.

Cons

Growth is great but not when it’s mismanaged. There are too many chiefs and too many teams surrounding opening new locations that it creates chaos. Teams get assigned to dissect every move which leads to complete bottlenecks in getting things done. I’ve never seen so many people doing the same thing and not get anything accomplished. The culture in the beginning is great. Cool Onboarding classes, town halls, meetings, etc. but behind the curtain are people who can’t seem to live by the BS they are selling to you. Constant negativity, entrusting people who are so self absorbed they don’t know how to lead, talking down to others and only focusing on what’s wrong instead of “high fiving” what goes right. This place continues to lose talented people who genuinely cared about the mission but clearly misguided by the leadership of this organization. They lay people off so leadership can take their bonus for the year yet scream when they can’t seem to staff again when they need to. Be expected to give your life away. The expectation is to work 10-12 hours/ day including weekends and holidays. If you don’t you’re seen as a weak link on your team so be aware! Words they use for various teams like tiger teams and shark rooms should tell you everyone is out for blood.
